19th Century Holy Land Mother-of-Pearl Icon
About the Item
This fantastic mother-of-pearl icon was made in Jerusalem at the end of the 19th century, and is beautifully carved with mother-of-pearl and set with abalone. The central scene shows the Last Supper of Christ, with Jesus shown at the centre of a long table, at which his 12 Disciples eat and converse. Each figure is individually carved from a single piece of mother-of-pearl and arranged in a scene which displays exceptional attention to detail.
The central scene is situated inside a shaped rectangular frame, which is extremely impressively carved with scrolling motifs and set with panels of abalone. The icon is surmounted by a figure of Jesus inside an abalone panel, and mounted onto a wooden frame with a hinged stand to the rear.
