20th Century Israeli Defense Forces Brass Hanukkah Lamp

About the Item

A brass hanukkah lamp made by Israeli Defense soldiers features nine bullet and shell cartridges in the form of candleholders. The bullet cartridges are screwed into a 75-mm shell cartridge, itself supported on two additional bullet cartridges. Emblem of IDF is soldered onto a large horizontal base. On the front a plaque with English inscription reads "I.A.C.E." [International Air Cadet Exchange] 1970, Israel Air Force." The emblem of Israeli Air Force and the Star of David are also found on a metal plaque soldered or glued onto shell cartridge. This seemingly mirrored aesthetic echoes the historical backdrop of the War of Attrition in 1970 to when it was made. Both strength and robust qualities are representative of tribulations in events of this time. The Hanukkah lamp commemorates the number of days that the Temple lantern blazed; the ninth, shamash, stands tallest and serves as a help candle used to light the others from right to left. The Temple’s menorah, one of its most important ritual objects, burning for one day instead, the flame stayed alight for eight days, until a new supply of oil could be found, which made this the basis for the festival of lights celebration of Hanukkah. Every item in Menorah Galleries is accompanied by a Lifetime “Certificate of Authenticity” and additional documentation and information regarding the individual artifact and its culture.
