Antique, hand carved Italian work of religious art.
This Gerard Majella sculpture is another one of our recent rare finds. Also, because this could very well have been a grand tour purchase of a very well-to-do traveler. This Italian born Saint was declared blessed in 1893 and in the year 1904 he was canonized. It must have been around that era that this inspired one of the great Italian carvers to create this truly beautiful and serene sculpture of Saint Gerard. Sculptures of Gerard are a rare find and to have found one in this beautiful, natural mineral stone again felt like a blessing. His natural body poisture, his closed eyes, the truly tender manner in which he is holding the crucifix as well as the many details in his 'robe' reveal that this can only be the work of a highly skilled and seasoned sculptor. Also with the few minor 'defects' this finest quality carved work of religious art is an absolute joy to own and to look at. So if this patron Saint of children (and unborn children in particular) AND of mothers (and expectant mothers in particular) is of importance to you or to a dear friend then maybe you or that dear friend should be its next custodian.
