Mid-20th Century Silver Etrog Container by Bezalel School Jerusalem

About the Item

Silver and silver filigree Etrog container, Bezalel School, Jerusalem, circa 1950. The lid is etched with grapes, vines, pomegranates and leaves, decorated with silver filigree on the finial, and around the finial, and inscribed in etched Hebrew inscription: "And you shall take you the boughs of goodly trees, branches of palm trees, the boughs of thick trees, willows of the brook", signed in etching Israel and Jerusalem. The container is decorated with beautiful dense silver filigree all around, combined with four silver medallions; the front medallions depict the the view of Jerusalem and titled in Hebrew "Jerusalem", the sides medallions depict the Western Wall and titled in Hebrew "the Western Wall". Raised on four cylindrical feet. Marked on the bottom: handmade, ST. 925, Israel 925, Bezalel. "Then the Lord said to Moses, See, I have chosen Bezalel son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah, and I have filled him with the Spirit of God, with wisdom, with understanding, with knowledge and with all manner of workmanship - to make artistic designs for work in gold, silver and bronze, to cut and set stones, to work in wood, and to engage in all kinds of crafts." (Exodus 31, 1-5). Established in 1906 by artist Boris Schatz as the “Bezalel School of Arts and Crafts”, Bezalel has evolved into one of the world's most prestigious art schools.
