Pair of Chinese Ming Dynasty Tomb Attendants
About the Item
The woman is outfitted in a traditional commoner Tang head-dress and ceremonial robes while the man is dressed in a Hanfu style loose court robe with medium size sleeves draping to both sides of the silk vestment. A linen band is fastened about the mid body and visible only from the back. The figures are rendered with flesh-like facial features, with puffed eyes open and arched eyebrows are finely delineated in black by supple brush strokes on a natural unglazed slip. Detailing of the folds and gatherings of the fabric are simply incised. One can often tell the profession or social rank of someone by what they wear on their heads.
Each are sculpted and decorated with Sancai glaze, a rich jade and amber glaze, that seems to give the pieces a glowing effect. Composed primarily of unpainted earthen single fire clay and mineral deposits and have removable hollow heads.
