“Saint Roch” Polychromed Wood, Juan de Anchieta’s Circle, Spain, 16th Century

About the Item

The bearded male figure appears with the angel, showing the wound or plague on his leg, with the hat and the pilgrim's cloak and the dog with the loaf of bread placed under one of his feet in a quite unusual way. All these attributes help to identify the image: Saint Roch (San Roque in spanish) was an Occitan pilgrim canonized in 1584, who was very venerated before this date, especially as a holy healer, and, most of all, in pestilence cases. There is a clear influence from the Italian Renaissance in the sculpture: of Michelangelo in the corporeality and anatomy of the two figures, the expressivity of the saint, the composition, etc. These details, together with other peculiarities such as hair, clothes and proportions, allow us to relate the sculpture with Juan de Anchieta's workshop (Azpeitia, around 1533-Pamplona, 1588), a sculptor of great importance in Spanish art of the 16th century with work in the North of Castile, Aragon, Basque Country, Navarre and Burgos, who is considered one of the main figures of the Romanism “school” or “trednd” in Spanish Renaissance. It is believed that he was trained in Italy, hence his stylistic connection with certain works of Jacobo della Quercia and, above all, inspiration from Michelangelo. The influence of Valladolid's focus is also clear in its style, where he has been documented between 1565 and 1570. Compare, for example, with the altarpiece of the church of San Pedro de Zumaia (Pamplona), completed in 1577, commissions which he made in the Cathedral of Burgos between 1576 and 1578 (Coronation of the Virgin and carving of Mary located on the facistol of the choir), or the main altarpiece of the Parish of Santa María de Tafalla (1581-1583). He had his workshop in Pamplona, with numerous commissions and, his style would be so appreciated that it inspired other masters in Aragon throughout the first third of the 17th century. Size: 16 x 11 x 25 cms.

  • Saint on a bed. Polychromed wood. Flemish school, 16th century.

Dream of a saint. Carved and polychrome wood. Flemish school, 16th century. Relief made of carved and polychrome wood that shows an old man with a particular headdress (reminiscent of some chaperones) lying on a bed and accompanied by two friars dressed in habits, who talk to each other. Iconographically, the figure of the old man lying on the bed (note the cushion that raises the upper part of the body, following the common use of the time) who has not died (probably) because he was not completely lying down, is reminiscent of how he was usually represented, for example, to San Antón, San Jerónimo, etc. It is not very likely that it is the subject of the Transit or Death of Saint Francis of Assisi due to the absence of the Stigmata and due to age. It would be part of a cycle of scenes in the altarpiece of a church, an accompaniment that would give the viewer more clues about the identity of those represented. Stylistically, Flemish sculpture...
