March 14, 1861, Amsterdam; died April 13, 1898 in Kuching. R.K. missionary in Borneo. He was the youngest son of Mr. F.Th. Westerwoudt, the well-known Catholic statesman, councilor of state in extraordinary. service, 40 years member of Gedep. States of the United States hollow. Initially a pupil of the municipal gymnasium in Amsterdam, 'father' Felix received his training as a priest at the seminaries Hageveld and Warmond, and went to St. Joseph's College at Mill-Hill near London to prepare for the mission, in October 1883, where he was ordained a priest March 1, 1885; On the 1st of October he left for Kuching, the capital of Sarawak, accompanied by 'father' Reijffert, also an Amsterdammer, who had been assigned to Kanowit's mission. Westerwoudt was assigned to the mission on Den Singhi, a 2000 feet high mountain a day's journey from Kuching, where 4 to 5000 land Dayaks live on a plateau, an unattractive and difficult to treat people of Borneo. Most residents are covered with skin diseases. None of them were Christian. After much hardship and countless hardships, after more than 13 years, den Singhi's mission counted about twenty good Catholic natives and a Catholic marriage was concluded. A school had already been established earlier, and in 1891 two spiritual sisters had come to assist, who mainly saw to the conversion of the girls. "Ask nothing, refuse nothing" was the missionary's slogan. The chief features of his life on the Singhi were his great prudence, his unconquerable trust in God, his great patience, his unfailing cheerfulness, his love of poverty and mortification. A tiny flock of Christians was the fruit of all that life of sacrifice. See book: E. van Rijckevorssel Westerwoudt, A Dutch Missionary Felix Westerwoudt, Tilburg 1919.

  • Miniature Portrait of a Distinguished Lady, Signed Stieler
    Located in Delft, NL
Miniature portrait of a distinguished lady, signed Stieler. Bronze frame behind oval round glass, 19th century Signed Stieler, Joseph Karl Stieler (1781- Mainz - 1858 Munich) was a German painter. The size is 10 cm x 7.5 cm x 1 cm 1820-1830 From 1820 until 1855 he worked as royal court painter of the Bavarian kings. He is known for his Neoclassical portraits, especially for the Gallery of Beauties at Nymphenburg Palace in Munich. Born in the city of Mainz to a long-established family of engravers, punchcutters and die makers, Stieler received some artistic training from his father, August Friedrich Stieler (1736–1789). After the early death of his father, Joseph Karl autodidactically completed his apprenticeship and began his career as a painter of miniatures, which were increasingly sought after by bourgeois circles After Mainz had been occupied by French revolutionary troops in 1792, Stieler followed the expelled court of Prince-Archbishop Friedrich Karl Joseph von Erthal to Aschaffenburg. Here he met with the later Archbishop Karl Theodor Anton Maria von Dalberg, who became his most important patron and sponsor. From 1802 to 1805 he attended the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna in the master class of Heinrich Füger. Stieler's portrait style was most especially shaped during his work in the Parisian atelier of François Gérard, a student of Jacques-Louis David. In 1808, he established himself as an independent portraitist in the city of Frankfurt and in 1810 travelled through Italy. From 1812 he worked at the court of King Maximilian I Joseph of Bavaria. In 1816, he again travelled to Vienna to paint the portrait of Emperor Francis I of Austria. Between February and April 1820, he worked on his portrait of Ludwig van Beethoven, which is probably the most well-known representation of the composer today. In 1847 he also painted the portrait of Lola Montez...

  • A Rare Anglo Indian Double Miniature Portrait Picture Frame, Circa 1890
    Located in Ottawa, Ontario
The freestanding cartouche-shaped tinned copper frame embossed overall with scrolling leafy vines surrounding a pair of open oval reserves flanked on either side by embossed motifs of lovebirds. The back showing a hinged easel support which allows the frame to be freestanding, and two top loading compartments intended to receive a pair of framed portrait miniatures which can then be viewed through the twin oval open reserves on the front. The rather naive albeit charming construction & decoration is consistent with items sold by street merchants in the various bazaars & marketplaces frequented by Western & European tourists travelling throughout India and The Middle East during the later part of the 19th century and early 20th century. There are surprisingly very few, if any similar examples of this frame currently available. This would most certainly be a unique addition to any collector of portrait miniatures, particularly those made by India Company School...
