1920s Italian Vintage Set of Five Ethnographic Plaster Busts by Paravia, Turin

About the Item

Extremely rare set of five ethnographic painted plaster busts realized in the 1920s ca by Produzione Scientifica Paravia in Turin, Italy. Each bust describes one of five different ethnographic group using the scientific standards and knowledge of the time. The types are: African, Caucasian, Native American, Aborigen and Chinese. Each bust has a red metal round seal logo of Produzione Scientifica Paravia on the left and a card with the anthropological description of each group and the names of the scientists responsible for the related informations. The busts are generally well preserved with some minor losses. Only exception is a portion of a feather of the bust of the Native American that has been restored. Dimensions: each bust has a base of 20 x 20 cm with a variable height from 29 cm to 35 cm. Collector's note: The origins of the company date back to the ancient Zappata typography, founded in the 17th century in Turin, Italy, and passed in 1802 to a company run by Giovan Battista Paravia (1765-1826), who renamed the publishing house with its own name. His son Giorgio, after obtaining the license of printer, in 1845 published one of the first printed periodicals, the primary educator, journal of education and elementary education, referring to the French Journal d'éducation. At his death the company was taken over by the widow and his cousin Innocenzo Vigliardi, who decided to expand the activity in the pedagogical field, then passing to the press of stories for children, especially thanks to the collaboration of Emilio Salgari as a translator, author and proofreader. Since 1911 he has published the Latin dictionary Campanini Carboni.
