About the Item
A very fine antique Celestial floor globe on stand by W. & A.K. Johnston, 1879.
Representation of stars and constellations as they would appear on a sphere (Celestial sphere) of infinite radius with the Earth at the center. Given a particular time and location on the Earth, can be used to determine what will be visible in the sky. Decorated with drawings of the imaginary objects making up the constellations. The background is blue and the stars are in white with the size indicating magnitude down to 6th.
Orb with the heavens in dark blue with gold stars. Constellation figures. Housed in the original mahogany stand, the meridian ring made of engraved brass, the horizon ring made of mahogany and inlaid with ebony scales, the globe with the original blue paper scale. The stand also made of mahogany with ring-turned baluster shaped legs and connected with a turned 'X' frame stretcher. The globe marked " 18" celestial globe W. & A.K. Johnston
A quite dramatic & unusual constellation depictions include several enlightenment period scientific instruments; numerous lion, bear, serpent and horse figures; many classical figures: Hercules, Orion, Aquarius and others concentrated mainly in the northern hemisphere. Stars are shown in order of magnitude with golden circles and names. A rare large antique celestial floor globe on stand in unusually fine condition.
