Louis XVI Period Giltwood Barometer from France, 1774-1793

About

This rare barometer is known as a Selon de Torricelli and dates to the late 18th century. This name refers to the mechanism invented by Italian physicist Evangelista Torricelli over 100 years earlier. It is giltwood with motifs of the laurel leaf surrounding the musical instruments at the top. There are more laurel leaves at the sides and bottom. The molding that frames the glass has linear beading and rais-de-cœur motifs. Signed, Par Binda de Lyon. Errard a Barleduc.
