Mid-Century Expanding Spyglass Brass & Leather
About the Item
Mid-century spyglass brass & leather (similar to a telescope) expands from 7 1/8 to 17 1/4" - from a Palm Beach estate.
How you focus a spyglass - Pull out all sections all the way and focus by adjusting the smallest eye-section in and out (not turning like a telescope or manual camera lens). It helps to have something to steady the spyglass on. As you adjust the length of the eye section smaller, the blur will start to show color, then as you continue shortening the length, you will reach a focus where you can see leaves on a tree, for example, and if you keep shortening the length of the eyepiece you will lose focus again. (Imagine how difficult it was for a sea captain scanning the horizon from a heaving aft-deck. )
Brass is polished and lacquered.
