About the Item
Stylish Dupont Ligne 2 gas lighter in rose gold plate with engine turned design, circa 1980.
Each Dupont has a serial number unique to that particular lighter. This example is marked on the base, ’S.T Dupont - Paris - Made in France' - with serial no. 81CKN08 and Dupont maker's mark. In good condition, serviced and in full working order.
The colour of the Dupont gas refill required to refuel the lighter is painted red, green, blue or yellow (or left gold). Revealed on removal of the lighter’s refuelling cap in the base of the lighter.
Dimensions: 5.5 cm/2⅛ inches tall X 3.75 cm/1½ inches wide X 1 cm/⅜ inch thick.
About Dupont
S.T. Dupont, founded by Simon Tissot Dupont, began life as a Parisian leatherwork shop on Rue Dieu in 1872.
Quickly becoming a cultured choice for Europe’s well-heeled, Dupont luggage was packed into steamships and train cabins alongside the great Maisons of Louis Vuitton, Goyard, Moynat and Au Départ. Customers included Empress Eugénie de Montijo, the wife of Napoleon III, who had earlier appointed young Louis Vuitton as her personal layetier in the 1850s.
Simon’s sons, Lucien & André-Tissot, took over in 1919 and set about innovating their father’s product range. In 1929, Lucien was invited to New York by Louis Cartier to present his travel cases in their 5th Avenue shop.
On the ship going to New York, he learned about the Wall Street crash, and on his subsequent return to Paris he decided to move even further upmarket and cater to clients unaffected by the economic downturn.
In 1935, the brothers were searching for a craftsman to work on gold plating. However, a typing error appeared in the advertisement and the word “Plaqueur” got transformed into “Laqueur”. They hired Georges Novossiltzeff, a master Lacquerer who had learnt his craft in the workshop of Jean Dunand, and became the first luxury Maison to master the Asian lacquer technique on metal.
In 1941, they produced the first luxury petrol lighter. The Maharajah of Patiala immediately ordered one hundred Chinese lacquer minaudière clutch bags for his consorts, with each containing a solid gold lighter, and the workshop spent three years completing the fabulous order.
The first off-the-shelf range of Dupont lighters was also produced in 1941 but were made from aluminium, due to restrictions on brass for the purposes of weapon manufacture during World War II.
Every single Dupont lighter required six hundred operations, three hundred tests, seventy pieces and over one hundred hours of work. The manufacturing process lasts for around four to five months in general, with every article unique because the worker who assembles the lighter engraves his initials under the striker wheel.
The Ligne 2 lighter was introduced in 1960s. Development of the design has continued with detail changes, meaning production of this model continues to this day.

Presented on brass inclined plain mounts attached to original turned ebonized wooden bases and uprights with axes secured at the top by brass acorn finials. Unusually, the terrestrial globe has a copyright date shown under the cartouche, 1946. The celestial globe is printed in beige against a dark blue background and shows the constellations and many named stars. Solid lines connect the stars within constellations rather than illustrating them as mythological and other figures.? A cartouche is present that includes the title and maker's address. When looking at the stars from Earth the viewpoint is effectively inside a celestial sphere. The surface of a celestial globe shows the star field as a projection viewed from the outside and is therefore reversed, with the constellations appearing as their mirror images. The terrestrial globe is printed in several colours and comprises of twelve coated lithographic paper gores with polar calottes over a twelve inch card sphere. The age of the globe has been confirmed by the political borders and named cities displayed. The globe is nicely detailed and has a grid network of parallels and meridians. It shows all the continents and countries as they were at the time it was printed and also indicates all the principal steamship routes with distances in nautical miles. The globe also has a printed Analemma - a diagram showing the declination of the Sun for every day in the year and the equation of time. The Analemma therefore shows the position of the Sun in the sky as seen from a fixed location on Earth at the same mean solar time, as the sun's position varies over the course of a year. A cartouche is present that includes the title and maker's address. Dimensions of each globe: 30.5 cm/12 inches (diameter) x 59 cm/23 1/4 inches (max height). George Philip, (1800–1882) was a cartographer and map publisher. He founded George Philip & Sons in 1834 in Liverpool primarily as a bookseller and stationer, but rapidly expanding to become a publisher of primarily maps, atlases and educational works. He had one son, also George (1823–1902), who was admitted to the business in 1848. George senior was born in Huntly, Aberdeenshire and by 1819 he had become assistant to the Liverpool bookseller, William Grapel before going on to start his own business. He used cartographers (such as John Bartholomew the elder, August Petermann, and William Hughes) to produce maps on copper plates.
