Miniature Antique Louis XV Style Chest of Drawers from France, circa 1910

About the Item

This antique miniature French table top commode dates to the early 1900s. It is in the Louis XV style with splayed feet, shaped (or "bombe") sides, and bronze hardware throughout. The shaped parquetry insets are fruitwood and the commode is walnut wood. Miniature pieces of furniture first appeared in the Middle Ages when there were guilds for furniture makers. In order to become a master, the carpenter had to present a life-sized example, but sometimes a reduced model, true to scale, would be presented. Later, in the 19th Century, these mini models gained a certain popularity among traveling word workers and ebenistes. A wood worker would create a miniature model based off of his drawings. This would then be presented to a potential client for approval before the normal size model was created. Other wood workers created miniatures simply for the pleasures of honing their skills, as the same level of technical efficacy would be required. One of the largest collections of miniature masterpieces resides in the Museum of Miniature Furniture in Chateau Vendeuvre in Normandy. Great as a table top accessory, this miniature antique French commode can fulfill many purposes, including doubling as a jewelry box.
