Pair of George III Baskets in Sizes Made in London in 1791 by Robert Hennell

About the Item

The baskets would have been used for sugar and cream and stand on a stepped oval pedestal foot decorated with prick dot and bright cut bands. The main bodies are "Boat" shaped in form and the rims are decorated with reeding, as are the arched swing handles. The main body is engraved with a beautiful band of foliate arch work and flower heads in ovals, all on a scratch engraved ground. Both the front and reverse are engraved with a vacant bright cut cartouche with incuse corners, decorated with bright cutting and foliate motifs. The engraving is some of the finest we have seen on pieces of this date and is in extremely crisp condition. Both baskets are in excellent condition and are fully marked in the foot and with the sterling mark on the handle. Very few baskets in sizes survive together today, as most have been split up over the years. Larger basket: Measures: Length 6.45 inches, 16.13cm. Width 3.5 inches, 8.75cm.
