Vintage set consisting of four Italian coat-hangers; they are well-proportioned in size, the design, simple and original, was made by combining polished brass and plexiglass, thus creating a pleasant and elegant color contrast; they were produced in the style of Fontana Arte in a well-equipped and innovative workshop in the province of Milan (Italy) between 1959 and 1964 (Fontana Arte is a major Italian design company founded in Milan in 1932 by Luigi Fontana and Giò Ponti and specializing in glass processing and furniture accessories). The craftsmen of those fabulous years, tired of conventional materials that did not allow them to go too far with their imagination, resorted to plexiglass for its extraordinary versatility and simplicity of workmanship that allowed them to create elegant, extravagant, and modern products rewriting the rules of contemporary design; objects, lamps, chairs, tables, and small tables, vases, magazine racks and much more were born from those skilled hands and inventive minds, objects that break definitively with the rationalist tradition. In those years plexiglass made its appearance on the design market, stimulating the interest and creativity of many designers and famous brands, which from the end of the 50's to the '70s gave shape to truly innovative products, populating architecture and fashion magazines; plexiglass also conquered daily living giving an original and contemporary aesthetic to objects that accompany us every day, trapped in traditional canons for a long time. Plexiglass is a plastic material, whose "real" name is Polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) or even more simply Methacrylate, derived from the name of its structural polymers. Plexiglass is the best-known trade name, which has become commonly used today. The inventor of this material was Otto Karl Julius Röhm, a German chemist who made it in 1928 and it was later marketed in 1933 by the German Röhm industry. In 1936 the first acrylic sheet was made under the name of Perspex, which means "to see through". In fact, among its most appreciated characteristics, there is transparency and it is often used as an alternative to glass also for its unbreakability. These characteristics, together with the fact that it is a ductile and versatile material, mean that Plexiglass lends itself easily to different types of processing and is used in different sectors. It is also known by the trade names Plexiglass, Perspex, Amanite, Lucite, Vitroflex, Acrivill, Perclax, Limacryl, Crylux, Oroglas, Setacryl, Altuglas. It is soft, sensitive to scratches and abrasions that can be easily removed with specific polishes. A curiosity about the birth of this material: in the thirties, the chemists of the company Röhm & Haas carried out some research to create a kind of transparent rubber. One day they left the mass of an experiment on a window sill. The next day, to their amazement, the scientists found themselves in front of not rubber, but a new kind of plastic: acrylic glass, or, with the correct chemical designation, polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA for short). The new material was called "PLEXIGLAS" and was registered as a trademark on August 9, 1933. The brass parts show slight signs of time, characteristics of the metal itself, but this guarantees its age and authenticity. Measures width cm.14, height cm.14, depth cm.7.
