This rare and captivating antique Louis Vuitton upright wardrobe trunk embodies the elegance and sophistication of a bygone era. Boasting the iconic “LV” monogram on its canvas-upholstered frame, this trunk is fully outfitted to facilitate the most meticulous packing. Five leather-covered drawers are beautifully fitted and lined with Fine canvas, and all feature the original leather pull-tabs. Six wooden hangers on pull-out rods keep garments wrinkle-free in any and all traveling conditions. Louis Vuitton is considered the world’s first luxury company, and its luggage and leather goods set the standard by which all others are measured. To find a period trunk by this company, in such excellent condition, attests to the superior quality of its craftsmanship. The most famous and valuable trunks were made by Louis Vuitton. Renowned across the globe as the first premier luxury goods purveyor, the firm first opened his doors in 1854. Among Vuitton’s first customers was the Empress Eugénie. His trunks were always impeccably crafted, with the finest leather, canvas and brass trim. Vuitton first made his mark with the creation of the flat-top steamer trunk and the wardrobe trunk. Flat-top trunks, unlike earlier rounded-top trunks, made cargo packing and stacking much easier. Thanks to the leather-lined compartments and hangers of the wardrobe trunks, travelers could pack delicate clothing without fear of damage in transit. To own such a trunk during the late 19th-early 20th century meant that one was able to travel abroad, something only the most affluent individuals did. A master of marketing, Vuitton passed his attention to detail on to his son Georges, who created the iconic LV logo in 1896 after his father’s death, ostensibly the very first designer logo to prevent counterfeiting.
