Lee Rohde Sculptural Lectern Form in Wengé, 1970

About the Item

An unusual and unique piece of American craft-Lee Rohde made vertical sculpture with storage compartment in solid wengé wood. Top opens to reveal a shallow storage compartment. Made in 1970. The idea behind the piece according to Mr.Rohde was when the man is changing his pants, he can place his wallet, watch, etc in the easy to reach spot-waist level. "Lee Rohde is a retired chemical engineer who spent much of his professional career at IBM in Westchester County, New York. His reputation is perhaps outshone by his father, Gilbert Rohde, the American industrial designer who produced iconic streamlined furniture for Herman Miller in the 1930s. Indeed, woodworking has always been an avocation rather than a profession for Lee, which justifies his current under celebrated status. But for more than a decade, he held a seat at the table of major American furniture makers, after being discovered by Lee Nordness at an upstate New York craft fair not long before Objects: USA. Rohde’s jewelry and silver chests were exhibited in for Men Only at Lee Nordness Gallery in 1971, in the inaugural show of the American Crafts Council Gallery in New York in 1972, and in New Handmade Furniture, curated by Paul J. Smith at the newly christened American Craft Museum in 1979. Rohde continues to make bowls and cutting boards in his home woodshop for the various charity auctions he supports in his community."

Sculptural Beechwood Functional Coat Rack Surfaced by Sho Ota
By Sho Ota
Located in Amsterdam, NL
At the intersection of industrial design and craftsmanship, Sho's sculptural works are both minimalistic and multi-layered. Every piece of collectible design is handmade by Sho himself. The development of the final form appears slowly through the making process and also depends on the wood – its appearance and texture can vary, making each piece unique. With all joints of the coat rack left visible, Sho Ota brings back the pleasure of contemplating real wood. With his design objects, Sho seeks to find an alternative to industrially - flattened wood and instead encourages us to discover the imperfection of this natural material. Sho Ota's special sence of color gives this wooden functional sculpture...
