Pair of Hand-Carved Stone Shrines from India

About the Item

Small antique stone shrines were usually vehicles for holding items which were related to a deity that was associated with a religion. We acquired these shrines because of their charming size, age, and workmanship. It is not common to find two of similar size and wear. These phenomenal, small, hand carved stone shrines still have some motifs that are identifiable while others have been worn beyond recognition over time. There are also slight traces of paint as many antique shrines were painted very colorfully. The first shrine has a pointed archway to the entrance where an item would be placed. A pair of birds is depicted over the archway and the roof line has a central motif. Twisted columns with pierced capitals and bases are on either side of the arched entrance. All this rests upon an ornamental base with pierced areas at the center. The second shrine features a pointed archway to the entrance of the shrine. There is a motif above the arch that is indistinguishable due to its age. Twisted columns with pierced capitals and bases uphold a large roof top. The ornamental base upon which all of this rests has pierced areas at the center and one level below. These are most likely carved from sandstone and would have been inset into a wall of a home. Age is estimated at 18th century or earlier. Today, these wonderful stone shrines can be used as accessories for holding miscellaneous accessories, or for their original purpose, as a house shrine.
