Brunschwig and Fils Montecito Blue Stripe Floral Textile by John Botz, 1979

About the Item

Rare Brunschwig and Fils Montecito Blue Stripe Floral textile by John Botz, 1979. Gorgeous abstracted take on classic blue pinstripe with floral accent. Appears to be cotton with slight sheen. Gorgeous, vibrant textile. A bit over 8 yards, continuous. John Botz was California painter and printmaker grew up in Long Island, New York, and first attended the University of Pennsylvania. He subsequently studied in Paris where he was influenced by the works of Henri Matisse and Raoul Dufy. On his return to the United States, Botz worked as a fabric designer for Brunschwig and Fils while continuing his painting studies. An avid artist since childhood, Botz held his first one-man show at the age of forty-five at the Pantechnicon in San Francisco (1971) where thirty-two of his thirty-four exhibited works sold on the opening day. This success, together with other encouraging exhibitions, led him to take up painting and graphic art full-time. Botz moved to Los Angeles, where, over the course of a long career, he exhibited widely and with success. He also opened and managed the John Botz Gallery which overlooked the ocean on the North Coast Highway and was, for many years, a fixture of the Laguna Beach artist community of which he became a leading member.

  • Brunschwig and Fils Boscobel Restoration Medford Inn 1804 Hand-Printed Wallpaper
    By Brunschwig & Fils
    Located in Brooklyn, NY
Brunschwig and Fils Boscobel Restoration Medford Inn 1804 hand-printed wallpaper. Very unusual paper - it is marked as custom hand-printed for the Boscobel Restoration, Inc. with a copyright date of 1977. The Boscobel Restoration is a rebuilt historic mansion (see images 9 and 10) in Garrison, NY using salvaged parts of an original Federal-period home that was demolished in the 1950s. This is a historic pattern, marked on the paper as "Medford Inn, 1804" and a registered design of the Society for the Preservation of New England Antiquities. The Medford Inn (see image 11) was built in 1804 and became known as a well-known hotel located on Main Street in Medford, Massachusetts. The design of the paper hearkens back to Roman tradition of wall decoration, with a trompe l’oleil effect that mimics ornate panelling and stone inlay. As per the this paper was also produced in a brown colorway and is part of the Digital Public Library of America and Historic New England...
