19th Century Japanese Boro Stitch Blanket Patchwork Black Large

About the Item

This blanket has an incredible patchwork quality and size. It feels both very intentionally created while also taking advantage of whatever patterns/materials were available. It’s not precious - it has age and wear. It was meant for living with and you can see the reinforced “boro” stitch throughout the entire quilt. On the reverse side there is a beautiful black and navy arrangement of colour - with highs and lows of tonality. One side of the blanket is finished with a delicate blue floral pattern and it could not have been used in a better way. Boro is essentially the practice of using a simple running stitch (a sashiko stitch) to reinforce a textile item using spare or would-be-discarded scraps of fabric. It is a practice that grew out of necessity in medieval Japan, and has evolved, four centuries later, into a distinctively gorgeous textile artform.
