A 19th century American, reversible, Venetian striped flat-weave wool and cotton carpet, double sided, in vibrant, rainbow hued stripes on a cream colored field, in 2 sections, hand sewn together (as originally made), with tan canvas twill tape binding. With its bold graphic design, this carpet would be beautiful in either a country interior or a modern one. Despite their name, there is no confirmed historical connection between Venice Italy and so-called American Venetian carpets which were made for simple interiors. Venetian carpets were woven in narrow strips between 27" and 36" wide; these were hand-sewn together. The stripe might be “broken up” with an alternating repeat known as a ladder stitch.
