About the Item

In Italy, the southeastern part of the Province of Belluno is called Alpago. In this natural basin, sheep farming played an important role in the economy of many families until the first half of the nineteenth century. The wool obtained from the two annual shearing of the Alpagota sheep, has long represented the starting material for the production of quilts, fabrics and knitwear. The Alpagota is an indigenous Italian sheep with a thick and wavy coat, with a color that varies from the prevalent yellow to brownish. This breed, has long been at risk of extinction and its wool is destined for landfills. The short story here above is the reason why ruga.perissinotto design studio started its research on local italian wools and decided to start a self-production of blankets in collaboration with Lanificio Paoletti wool mill. The design of the blanket and its particular pattern have a charming story connected to the past and ancient gestures. Thanks to its characteristics, the Alpago sheep has a triple productive attitude: meat, wool, but also milk. For counting the quantity of milk, hazelnut sticks were engraved on roman numbers corresponding to the kilos of milk and the owner’s name on the back. The stick, called Tessera, was then divided into two: one part remained with the owner while the other with the one who kept the accounts. The history of Tessera brings with it the charm of ancient gestures, of tools Lost in time and of simple but effective communication systems. Our blanket is made up of two parts, the two together showing the signs used for counting the milk.
