Bertil Vallien Cameo Midnight sky Vase with Ravens Crows Kosta Boda Atelier 1992
By Bertil Vallien
Located in Mobile, AL
Bertil's work is often haunting, but this bottle vase is ready for display or perhaps for the most adventurous as a container for your personal witch's brew. A entire layer of end of day type scattered glass has been cameo acid cut back to reveal a frosted midnight blue glass underlayer. But, just look at these birds. Ravens, crows... certainly birds of the night. A taller neck than I have seen before and the slight slumping and bubbled inclusions reinforce the visual message that this is both art and handicraft. The fortuitous bold coloration of the birds makes the pattern boldly assert. Marked Kosta Boda Atelier 92 and B Vallien...

Gunnar Ander Black Lacquered Candelabra for Ystad Metall, Sweden 1950s
By Gunnar Ander, Ystad-Metall
Located in Utrecht, NL
Gunnar Ander was an industrial designer and architect, and one of the brightest stars of 20th-century Swedish metal, wood, and glass design. His most well-known models are the innovative designs for Ystad Metall, such as this unique pair of candle holders. His designs are represented in numerous museums in Sweden.
This branched candle holder, or ‘ljusstake’ in Swedish, is a modern interpretation of the classic candlestick that was once found in most Swedish homes. The versatile shapes and forms of this model come alive thanks to the modern materials and the colour choice. The black lacquered metal structure is composed of 6 asymmetrical arms that share the same curve except for the central pair that are perfectly straight. The arms connect at the base in the middle and are wrapped by a sculptural brass piece. This creates a neat, seemingly gravity defying visual effect. The candles’ cups are made of brass that stand out beautifully against the black structure. The cups are formed so that the dripping wax is caught inside of them, similarly to chambersticks. Arranged carefully at different heights, the cups make the design dynamic and quite organic as well. With home improvements...

Scandinavian Modern Gunnar Nylund Stoneware Antilope Sculpture Rörstrand ca 1955
By Gunnar Nylund, Rörstrand
Located in EL Waalre, NL
Gunnar Nylund, Stoneware Sculpture of an Antilope, Rörstrand, Sweden, circa 1955
Description
A large stoneware sculpture of an Antilope, finished in matte reddish brown and dark brown glazes on a satin-gloss black lacquered wooden base, made in a limited edition of 200 pieces.
Gunnar Nyland was particular known for his animal figures with beautiful experimental glazes. The larger examples of exotic animals - like this antilope - are especially sought after.
This sculpture was designed by Gunnar Nylund and executed by the Swedish ceramics factory Rörstrand in the 1950's. It is fully signed underneath: R (Rörstrand) Sweden with 3 crowns (after 1951 Rörstrand changed to the international spelling Sweden), GN (Gunnar Nylund) and 83/200. As it lacks the post 1960 VDN markings, this piece can be dated between 1951 and 1960.
Artist
Gunnar Nylund (1904-1997) was a Swedish artist, ceramist and sculptor most known for his work for the Swedish ceramic manufacturer Rörstrand.
