17th Century Spanish Wool Rug, Cuenca Renaissance of Arabesques

Renaissance rug of arabesques "Lotto type". - Rug Cuenca, Spain, 17th century. - Made with wool of sheep, linen or hemp. - Warp in raw wool and weft in linen or hemp in a raw color. Knots in colors ocher, yellow, lemon, saffron yellow and mustard. Blues light and dark, green and white. - The field of the rug is decorated with octagonal medallions and cruciform elements in the intermediate spaces, created by schematic and recollected leaves or atauriques. - The central border has the so-called "Chinese clouds" or ribbons, as scrolls forming eses, ending in serrated leaves that are twisted and joined with rings in the opposite direction. In addition there are flowers with curly strokes like hooks. To one side appears a narrow border with zigzag quotations. - The colors are typical Cuenca, golden yellow ocher for the background and yellow yolks and lemon, dark blues and pastel clarom the intense olica green and white giving luminosity. - The design of the field of this carpet is inspired by a Turkish model, from the Usak area, which had to be woven in large numbers for trade since it was very abundant since the first half of the 16th century and in Europe they were imported by distributing it through Venice. - One of the series of "turquoise" rugs that appear in the inventories of the 16th century so often, it must have been this "lotto type" of which there were rugs in many churches as in the Cathedral of Cuenca, these served as models for the weavers conquenses. - Its state of conservation is buerno for the time of the piece, without being cut by any site, it has been wanted to maintain as it has been found without restoring at the moment. It has areas of wear characteristic of the passage of time, but it has not been manipulated in order to preserve its essence. - Its small format probably indicates that it was an order for an altar of a Cathedral. - Expertise of the piece will be attached. - The price of the item includes packaging, insurance and transport of the article.
