19th Century Antique Large Kazak Karachopf Rug, Handknotted Green Blue Red Beige

About the Item

We find in this carpet all the features of the best known of Karaciof rugs, with the typical beige octagonal central medallion. As usual the mighty octagon stands out on the classical red and blue square checkerboard. Four red and blue hooks, repeated twice, connect the beige part with the medallion. The typical archaic patterns clarify the origin of the carpet, knotted north of Lake Sewan in the Nineteenth century, and lead us to the distant origins of the Eastern Turkestan. Beautiful and bright colors but also rational geometries characterize this ancient artwork knotted by local populations in the Caucasus area, who put into their carpets the pride for their traditions and culture. The geometric rigor of the decorations is unique, there are stylized animals, scheming symbols and various small decorations; here you see geometric shapes, stylized plants and flowers. This ancient Caucasian carpet (manufactured in the second half of the 19th Century) was knotted completely by hand. The central part has a geometric pattern in beige, ancient red and sugar-paper and darker blue; the two sides show two hues of green, forest green and meadow light green blending together in the middle. The outer border has a beige background, surrounded by two further sugar-paper blue and red geometrical borders. The colors are vibrant and the figures well shaped. A bright masterpiece that would equally fit in contemporary as well as in traditional settings. The ancient Caucasian carpets, a real passion for expert collectors and scholars of the local people’s traditions, are recognized by the beauty, expressive power, and decorative elegance of the rigorous geometric design; they are knotted on a horizontal frame by nomadic, semi-nomadic, or transuman populations; they are recognized by a symmetrical Ghiordes knot, also known as Turkibaf (turkish knot); warp and weft are made of wool. The natural colors, from vegetable or animal origin are bright and lively. Thanks to the good quality of the wool, Fine, tight and compact, knots are bright and endure time. This carpet is original, has never been restored and is in great condition, with no flaws. The different hues in colors are a distinctive feature of the weaving and the natural dyeing of the fibers.
