About the Item
Beautiful antique tribal Soumak rug, country of origin: Caucasus, date circa 1900. Size: 9 ft. 2 in x 11 ft. 4 in (2.79 m x 3.45 m).
This gorgeous tribal rug from the Caucasian mountains was created around the turn of the 20th century. It features to geometric pattern and has a tribal feel that would be perfect for design styles ranging from formal to boho chic. The colors blend to create an elegant look that is rich and sophisticated.
This rug stands out among Caucasian tribal rugs because it was created with a different technique than traditional tribal rugs. It was created using the Soumak stitch, rather than the traditional knots. It is a type of flat weave technique, but it is not the same as the traditional flat weave kilims. This technique is much like brocading, and you will see long threads carried over on the back throughout the pattern.
The pattern of a Soumak rug is not mirrored on the back, as with a pile weave. These rugs are typically of a finer weave, and they are considered more durable than traditional knotted rugs. They are thicker than kilims and well-constructed. Soumak rugs are known for their bold and colorful designs, as with this beautiful example. They often use many of the same patterns found in knotted rugs, but they tend to be more stylized.
