About the Item

This hand knotted wool antique Caucasian Karabakh rug has an abrashed patina that comes from the many years of aging. Design. The abrashed red field displays two large scale peacocks. Rose bouquets composed of cabbage roses, peonies, floral sprigs, rose buds and delicate trees extending outwards on each side. It is enclosed with a stylized gray patterned border. This is a very rare rug and truly a collector's item. It is so exquisite, it could also be used as a wall tapestry. This antique Karabahk is also vegetable dyed. Vegetable rug dyeing was used before synthetic dyes were invented, and to this day remains the best way to dye rugs. Vegetable rug dyeing leads to more beautiful, longer-lasting rug colors that hold up even under prolonged exposure to direct sunlight. Three of the most common vegetable dyeing materials are larkspur, indigo, and madder. Vegetable dyers create madder by boiling the madder plant's roots in the dye pot after drying and chunking them. Madder dye produces a red color. Indigo was originally created through the extraction and fermentation of indican from an indigo plant's leaves. Indigo dye can produce a variety of blue and purple shades, but its base form is a very dark blue. Larkspur production involves crushing and then boiling the larkspur plant's stems, flowers, and leaves. Larkspur dye is a shade of gold. Achieving different shades of dye colors involves using the same dye multiple times. Balancing a timeless design with traditional sensibility, this antique Peacock Karabagh rug will certainly add an air of antiquity.
