Rare Talish Accent Rug, c. 1870
About the Item
Antique Talish rugs, coming from one of the earliest inhabited regions of modern-day Azerbaijan, are well-known for their unique drawing and high-quality wool, as well as for a tendency to employ floral motifs, rather than the geometric designs that are more common in rugs from the Caucasus.
The artist who made this example has lent a wonderful abrash (colour variation) to the sky-blue central field, giving the illusion of a reflective pool of water, surrounded by painted tiles – a testament to the skill and talent of the Talish weavers. The border, unusually grand for a piece of this size, features a floral medallion motif against a rich ivory background, repeated across the rug in a wide variety of colours, including terracotta and burnt ochre.
In well-preserved condition for everyday use, with some minor age-related restoration, done to a high standard.
A timeless work of art, with a charming naivety and open composition, which would lend a light and airy feel to either a classic or contemporary setting.
