20th Century Red Blu Geometric MultiBorders Turkmenistan Rug, ca 1910
About the Item
Chuval is the bag used by Turkmen nomads to carry supplies and everyday objects, also used as wall decoration inside the tents.
Fierce, tending to sedentary, the Yomut is one of the main Turkmen tribes. To maintain the same pastures even for quite long periods, they settled on the slopes of the Balkan Mountains, not far from the coast of the Caspian Sea and, further north, in the area of the Persian emirate of Khiva.
All Yomut artifacts have structure and wool fleece, knotting has a dense density. Wide bands and very long and colorful warps give a touch of original beauty to the artifacts.
The most curious iconographic aspect of Yomut rugs concerns the variety of the Gul (a medallion-shaped design element typical of Central Asian rugs) of different shapes, sometimes reproduced in their heterogeneity even in the same artifact. The archetype Gul has a variously decorated interior and sometimes assumes a hexagonal shape. The different shape indicates the different tribes of origin.
Equally varied are the borders with a white background with meanders, boats, stylized birds, motifs inspired by the "dog that runs". The decorative richness is taken up in the headbands placed beyond the border, adorned with decorations of naturalistic inspiration, with frequent pine-shaped saplings.
In the chuval the most common plant offers four stripes of archetypes Gul, diagonally colored stylized floral designs and pine tree motifs.
