Antique Central Asian Fur Rug

About the Item

This is a rare example of a 'postak', used by the Kirghiz people inhabiting the Pamir mountains, made up of strips of animal fur hand-stitched together to form a pattern. It represents one of the earliest forms of floor covering known to mankind, as there is archeological evidence that these were already made in the Stone Age. Pile weaving resulted from man's attempt at mimicking the tactile qualities and thermal insulation of these early pieces. The central, camel coloured panel is from bear skin. The coloured frames are from Karakol sheep skin which has been successively dip dyed in indigo and madder.
