Antique East Turkestan Khotan Runner
About the Item
An antique East Turkestan Saf (also spelled Saff or Saph) Khotan rug from the first quarter of the 20th century. The elements of this runner make for a great ecumenical context. The Mihrab design in each of the 12 niches that compose this rug makes it easy to distinguish that it is a Saff Khotan Islamic Prayer rug. However, the term Mihrab is used both in Islamic cultures as well as some forms of Judaism and stands for a sanctuary or place of worship. Each prayer niche contains a "tree of life" motif. The "tree of life" is one of the oldest symbols representing the direct path between earth and heaven and has been used in ancient religions including the three main monotheistic faiths and spanned across European, Anatolian, Middle Eastern, and Central Asian primeval cultures. The yellow, red, and aubergine purple hues and the geometric T-element fret border (Yun Tsai T'ou Meander border) in contrast to the shabby-chic, evenly low pile texture make for a unique and fun way to create a decorative appeal.
