About the Item

A fabulous example of what is often considered by some to be the pinnacle of Turkmen weaving, as the work of the Tekke is the stuff of legend. In the decorative market, rugs of this design are called "Princess Bokhara" rugs, a reference to a marketplace where some of these rugs were once sold. This pattern has been oft copied, with new rugs from Pakistan and Afghanistan mimicking this design. If you recall, in the movie, The Godfather 2, a young Vito Corleone (played by Robert DeNiro) stole a rug of this design type, a prized possession in the early 20th century in America. The rug is in surprisingly good condition, the upper end received a bit more wear than elsewhere and has four cursory, somewhat crude repairs, but very minor repairs that really do not detract from the overall appearance and advantageously positioned at the very end in the corners, rather than in the center of the field. There is some minor wear in the field, relegating its use to a low foot traffic area or, as seen in the final image, as a beautiful bedspread. This rug is extremely decorative, extremely pretty as well as representing a true collector's item. The somewhat squarish size suggests it was made for domestic use rather than as an export item as many later ones were once the Russian subjugated Turkmenistan (Central Asia) in 1881. The variation of design in the borders, as well as the field ornaments distinguishes this rug from most others. Dimensions - 6'4" x 7'4".
