Antique Yomut Turkmen Asmalyk with 'Tree' Design

About the Item

Antique Yomut Turkmen asmalyk with 'tree' design. This superb example of a Yomut Turkmen asmalyk has the very scarce 'tree' design, also known as the 'gapyrga' design. Asmalyk were used to decorate the flanks of the camels in the Yomut Turkmen wedding procession, they usually formed part of the brides dowry and were woven in pairs. They were prized possessions and often displayed hanging inside the yurt. The weave is very fine and the asmalyk has a soft floppy handle. The asmalyk is in original condition with slight even wear and good pile, it retains some of the original tassels. The asmalyk has been hand washed and is ready for display.
