Mid 19th Century Bashir Gallery-Sized Carpet

About the Item

This eccentric but majestic Central Asian carpet was most probably woven by recently settled former nomads in an oasis town in the region of the middle Oxus River. The colors, especially the reds, are vibrant and all derived from natural vegetal sources. While the stripes of the border and field create a heavily vertical directionality, a rather charming feature of this rug is the large pseudo-medallion that is created by the niched areas at top and bottom. The village weavers have retained and transmitted in this piece much of the charm of Central Asian nomadic pieces.
