About the Item

Weavings known in the market as Bashir were woven in several locations in the cities and villages along the Oxus River in what is now Uzbekistan. Rugs and carpets of this type often combine persianate drawing with motifs derived from the local eastern Turkmen traditions of their weavers. This piece is slightly different. With its long and narrow proportions, it was almost certainly made for local Central Asian architecture as an alternative to imported Persian carpets from further west in the Near East. Though quite a beautiful and pleasing weaving in its own right, the nature of the drawing used, including the repeat floral field and implied lattice system, as well as the minimal yellow vegetal border, make this piece an important historical document. It lends evidence for the origin of the Bashir weaving tradition itself and is an important clue to the nature of Turkmen weaving in general. Both the field and narrow border are modeled on eastern Persian prototypes from the area of Herat, dating to the late 18th century until about 1800. Not only are no Turkmen motifs present in this piece, but it is this very field pattern and the repeating lobed shapes formed within it that may indicate the origins of an iconic Turkmen pattern used in the celebrated asmalyk trappings of the western Turkmen Yomut. In this sense, we may observe that post-classical Persian models were adopted by eastern Turkmen weavers and later supplemented with more local traditions. Additionally, we may see that further west in the direct vicinity of Khorosan in Persia, such designs had already been incorporated and transformed by the western Turkmen weavers of that area. As such, this piece represents a design tradition that has come full circle. While already appropriated and transformed by western Turkmen weavers such as the Yomut, the distinctive field pattern used in this piece was faithfully replicated further east in the heart of Central Asia, presumably only to be transformed again by later generations of Turkmen weavers.
