Red Turkmen Tekke Flat-Woven Main Carpet Rug, Late 19th Century
The Turkmen are mainly known for their pile-weaving tradition. This said, several Turkmen groups have produced often exceptionally fine kilims and flat-weaves. This piece was most likely woven by the Yomut in Western Central Asia and makes use of a technique reminiscent of embroidery, using wool and cotton on a tapestry-woven foundation. The all-over pattern that is achieved has largely been determined by the technique used, though the design was appropriated into the repertoire of pile-weaving in the later 19th century.
