About the Item

An extremely artistic small size Tribal purple antique Khotan rug, country of origin / Rug type: Antique East Turkestan rugs, circa date: 1900. Size: 4 ft x 8 ft (1.22 m x 2.44 m) For centuries, antique Khotan rugs have stood out for their unique artistry and this is an excellent example that originates from the region around the turn of the 20th century. The beautiful muted purples, blue, green, ivory, grey and brown of the beautiful antique East Turkestan rug are blended in a way that gives it a peaceful and serene feel. The harmony and serenity that are conveyed by the antique rug are further enhanced by its horizontal symmetry, as well as its traditional Persian rug design. The design is based on a central medallion and two pendants. However, all of these elements are of equal size, with the central medallion being slightly more understated than the two circular motifs that are placed in the pendant positions. This has the effect of balancing the overall sense of proportion in this whimsical small size rug. The field of this antique tribal rug contains beautiful butterflies, small flowers, and motifs that are used sparingly to highlight the central medallion and pendants of the purple Khotan rug. However, for the most part, the field makes use of white space to show off the beautiful mauve color of the rug. This tribal Khotan East Turkestan rug is beautifully executed with main borders that contain regularly spaced in geometric elements that further enhance its sense of formality. The area of Khotan is located in an area that was a main stop on the Silk Road. Artwork from the area often chose elements of both Chinese and Persian design. The inclusion of the geometric keystone border and angular corner brackets of the rug reflect Chinese influence, as does the use of roundels in the design.
