Vintage Khotan Pomegranate Turkestan Rug, 1950-1970
About the Item
This vintage carpet is a Khotan, made between 1950 and 1970 in Sinkiang (Xinjiang), in northeastern China, the territory known as East Turkestan. It measures 240 × 132 cm (7' 10" × 4' 3") and has a hand-knotted wool fleece on a cotton warp and weft. At the opposite ends of the field, two vases give life to pomegranate trees that decorate the whole field and converge in the center forming a rhombus with the branches. In different cultures, from Eastern to Mediterranean, this fruit is also a symbol of abundance and fertility. There are numerous frames, three of which reproduce the same auspicious decorative motif in various ways. On a dark blue background, rust and pale marc, the combination of colors is bold and very modern, such as to fit nicely into classic environments with a whimsical note and into modern environments with extreme success!
