XXth Century Yellow Grey and Brown Mantra Nepalese Prayer Rug, About 1980

About the Item

Carpet made of Tibet for the Nepalese market. These carpets with mystical content were made for the Communities of the Nepalese Buddhist temples. These carpets accompany the monks in their daily exercises. In the centre of the carpet, we find the six syllables of the "Mantra" in the Sanscrit language: their pronunciation helps the mind immerse themselves in deep meditation. The edge is decorated with graphic elements that are linked to Buddhist worship.

The Ersari are a tribe of the Turkmen people of Central Asia and one of the five main tribes of Turkmenistan. The Eersani tribe, the most numerous among the Turkmen tribe, takes its name from the legendary Turkmen hero Ersari Khan. The group's carpets generally attributed to the Ersari include specimens characterized by a vast repertoire of compositional schemes, drawings, and techniques; this is because, under the generic name of Ersari, carpets knotted by various sub-tribes are included. Of great interest is the archaic polygonal motif decorated with thin pendants (probably its derivation from ancient fabrics...
