Hand-knotted in wool, this antique 9x11 art deco rug originates from China circa 1920-1930.
On the Design
In this particular rug, deep blue tones underscore a play of floral patterns and pictorials in bright, spring-like colors—most visible in the border, where admirers of the craft will note bird and butterfly depictions in particular.
Keen eyes will further admire the more subdued floral patterns in the field—so subtle one almost mistakes this for an open field rug. It’s a most unusual find for this element alone, but this is just one of many rarities and beauties that speak to this rug as a masterpiece of Chinoiserie style.
