Early 20th Century Chinese Black and Pink Wool Rug
About the Item
Authentic Early 20th century Chinese black and pale pink wool rug
Size: 5'0" × 8'0" (152 × 243 cm)
This circa 1920 antique Chinese rug features an intricate all-over design of linear patterns and floral abstractions in black against a field of light pink. The contrast of the geometric and the natural, as well as of the design and field colors, makes for an intriguing overall presentation. There is evidence that decorative Oriental rugs and carpets have been a significant art form within the Chinese culture for many centuries, if not for several millennia. For the most part, designs of antique Chinese rugs are as indigenous as those of antique Chinese porcelains and silk textiles, featuring repeating simple design devices. Unlike Persian rugs, Chinese rugs are not generally associated with local rug production areas, but there are differences between central Chinese rugs and those from East Turkestan, Tibet and Mongolia.
