Gold Ningxia Chinese Chair Back Rug
About the Item
Small rugs with scalloped tops were woven to fit the backs of hardwood chairs and they were as Ningxia specialty. Often gold, as here, they employed familiar motives such as the lion dog above mountains and waves. This charming circa 1910 rug is in excellent condition with a conformable peony border. Ningxia in northern China has been a center of rug weaving since the 17th century.
