Joseph Carini Carpets
Native New Yorker Joseph Carini is a designer whose expertise in rare antique rugs and fascination with the emotional impact of color led him to explore the unconventional dyes and natural fibers used in ancient weaving traditions of Asia. In 1997, he cofounded carpet company CariniLang with his then-wife, Aurelie Lang. Now known as Joseph Carini Carpets, the company continues to design innovative pieces that bridge ancient and contemporary practices in rug-making.
Drawing inspiration from pop culture, Art Deco style, and street art, Joseph Carini has married his avant-garde design sensibilities with traditional artisanal techniques and materials. The resulting carpets are made from natural fibers like silk, wool, and wild nettles and colored with pure, natural dyes made from healing botanicals.
Although many of his area rugs are made using authentic Tibetan knotting techniques, Carini constantly experiments with weaving and dyeing methods, pushing the boundaries of contemporary carpet-making. The resulting rugs are one-of-a-kind works of art that combine ancient know-how with modern innovation. Carini often works with other artists and artisans to bring his visions to life.
Joseph Carini Carpets is certified by GoodWeave, a non-profit organization dedicated to equitable labor practices and transparency throughout the supply chain. Artist-designed and ethically handcrafted by skilled artisans, Carini’s carpets have been featured in publications like Vanity Fair and Elle Decor and exhibited at the Houston Contemporary Art Fair and New York Fashion Week. In 2016, Joseph Carini Carpets hosted the American debut of Japanese ceramicist Yuki Hamaya and produced new rug designs in collaboration with that artist. Carini continues to live and work in New York City, producing unique carpets of the highest quality.
