Beautiful Light Green Antique Khotan Rug, Country Of Origin: East Turkestan, Circa Date: Late 19th century. Size: 6 ft 1 in x 11 ft 10 in (1.85 m x 3.61 m)
This truly impressive antique Oriental rug — an absolutely gorgeous antique Khotan rugs made in East Turkestan toward the end of the nineteenth century — is something of an historical dossier on the history of the aesthetic evolution in antique Oriental rug design. With a pattern going back to the earliest known carpet designs, this impressive antique Khotan has rows of quartered volute medallions set against a golden field. Narrow borders with hooked motifs, no less atavistic in derivation, furnish an appropriate frame for the field, allowing it to predominate in the overall effect of the piece. As Khotans go, this example is incomparable — which is saying something significant, due to the very well deserved reputation enjoyed by Khotans as Oriental rugs of the highest caliber.
