A beautifully impressive blue antique Indian Art Deco rug, Country of origin / Rug type: Antique Indian rugs, circa 1920. Size: 8 ft 8 in x 11 ft 8 in (2.64 m x 3.56 m) The Art Deco design of this predominantly blue rug reflects the modern design that began to emerge in the Art Deco period. Produced in the 1920’s, this now antique rug reflects design characteristics that would give rise to modern and postmodern designs in the mid 20th century. Art Deco design is characterized by what would eventually lead to the development of the streamlined art of the mid-20th century. Art Deco design was based on geometric shapes and striking color combinations, as one can see in this magnificent antique Indian rug. The abstract design is asymmetric, with much of the visual weight towards the lower left corner of the antique Art Deco rug. The arrangement of the rectangular shapes draws attention to the center and the subtly shifting shades of the brilliant blue background. The asymmetry of the blue antique Indian Art Deco rug provides a source of interest that emphasizes line and form. The use of color creates a three-dimensional effect that appears as if one shape is superimposed onto another. One of the interesting features of this design is that, while darker colors tend to make objects appear to recede into the distance, the placement of light colors in this rug make the blacks appear to be in front of the lighter colors. This was achieved through an offset placement of the simple shapes, which gives it dimension and the appearance of layering of the design elements. The choice of a darker background color allowed the artist to achieve this effectively.
