About the Item
Beautiful Large Antique Indian Agra Rug, Country of Origin: India, Circa Date: 1900 – The city of Agra, India, has an extensive history of making exquisite rugs and many other Indian arts. The story of this rug began in the 1600s and tells an interesting story. The first Mughal Emperors had a deep affection for Persian culture and art. The rug-making industry in Agra began when the first Mughal Emperor spent time there in exile. He was amazed at the court carpets of the Safavid Empire and decided to bring the craft home to Inda and establish their own rug-making traditions.
This exquisite burgundy and cream rug shows the influence of its Persian roots. The design is similar to the “Herati” design that is often found in 16th-century Persian carpets. The individual rug weavers eventually developed a unique artistic style in their color combinations and stylized variations of the patterns.
Agra came into its own early in the 17th century, and by the time the industrial revolution came around at the turn of the 20th century, India had a well-established industry. Many of these rugs were commissioned by wealthy businessmen and factory owners as a way to show off their new success.
