Antique North Indian Rug

About the Item

Antique North Indian rug. Size: 14'0" × 24'3" (426 × 739 cm). This circa-1900 antique North Indian rug features an all-over design of floral abstractions and arabesques in sharp inky blue against a field of beige. A dark blue main border completes the look of the turn of the century antique carpet. The production of antique Indian oversized area rugs and carpets dates from the Mughal period of the late 1520’s, beginning with the conquest of Northern India by Babur. Akbar the Great (1556-1605) and his successors sponsored and encouraged the weaving of splendid Indian versions of classic Persian floral, garden and hunting indian area rugs and antique carpets.
