About the Item

Mid-20th Century Indian Dhurrie Flat-Weave Rug Size: 8'4" × 11'9" (254 × 358 cm) This midcentury Dhurrie flat-weave antique rug features geometric and floral abstractions, arabesques and serrated leaf patterns in shades of red, beige, green and brown against a field of green. The herati pattern, also known as the “fish pattern,” a stylized design of a flower usually centered in a diamond and framed by diagonal leaves – and a commonly occurring motif in Oriental rug-weaving – serves as a sort of medallion. A Dhurrie is a flat-woven cotton vintage carpet from India. In the 20th century, these antique flat-woven Indian dhurrie rugs began to be recognized and lauded as a significant art form from the Indian subcontinent. Transcending social boundaries, the Dhurrie rug was used by both commoner and royalty; at its simplest it was a multipurpose textile used as a floor covering, bedding or packaging, while at its most elaborate it was woven with the finest fibers and enhanced by gold-wrapped thread when gracing royal palaces.
