Size 8 ft x 10 ft ( 2.44 m x 3.06 m ) This beautiful neutral African Style Retro rug is the perfect piece for contemporary designs that feature grays, browns, and a soft, and harmonious palette. It is geometric in form and looks to be an abstract contemporary design, but the origins of this rug are much older and originate in ancient tribal traditions. During the mid-20th century interior designers began to look to Primitive-inspired designs to soften the lines of Streamlined Modern spaces. They needed pieces that were geometric and linear, but that broke from the rigidity of steel and glass architecture to give it a more inviting look. African designs became popular among retro interior designers because these ancient patterns used geometrics, but they also reflected the natural world and seemed to evolve organically. The pattern of this retro-inspired carpet takes its inspiration from the weaving patterns of the women of the Democratic Republic of Congo. It is a pattern used in weaving traditional Kuba cloth, which uses elements of design passed down from generation to generation. Many of the designs were symbolic representations of the world around them, such as the changing of the crops. Although many of the meanings of designs have been lost over time, midcentury artists found them as intriguing as we do today. It is a piece that is both contemporary, and that reflects the natural world.
