About the Item

Moroccan rugs became highly popular in the West and in Europe, with Mid-Century Modern designers – such as Le Corbusier – and artists, such as Matisse - who paired the thick piled Berber rugs with their sleekly designed furniture and modern, abstract paintings. The early adoption of rug-making by native Moroccans is certainly due in large part to the distinctive climate of the region: Moroccan rugs may be very thick with a heavy pile, making them useful in the snow-capped Atlas Mountains; or they may be flat woven and light, more suitable in the hot climate of the desert. The nomadic Moroccans and Berber tribes used these pile-knotted, and flat-woven carpets as bed coverings and sleeping mats. Many Berber carpets are woven by the Beni Ourain peoples from the Rif Mountains near Taza, using neutral shades of un-dyed, natural ivory wool, or sometimes eye popping hues, with designs ranging from ordered geometric shapes to more free-form, expressive, abstract patterns. Part of the appeal to the modernists was the 'primitivism' and expressive 'drawing' in the carpets. Unlike the traditional antique oriental rugs, there is little formality about these rugs, yet their casual vibe fits in wonderfully with modernist décor. Vintage and antique Moroccan rugs are popular today for their decorative flexibility and reasonable pricing as compared to other styles of antique rugs. This Mid-Century rug embodies the beautiful weaving, simple, elegant graphics and the thick, long strand wool typical of the region.
